SHADOWDOCK

In September 2024 we invited audiences to journey 40 feet below sea level to the iconic dock where Titanic was launched, where they experienced immersive display of light, shadow, colour and sound, to see and feel the world around you from a new perspective.

Developed in partnership with designer Henry Sykes and Three’s Theatre Company, you are invited to explore the built, and forgotten, heritage of Belfast and discover its creative future. Watch and listen as our team writers, composers, and lighting designers transform this magnificent structure from an empty void into an immersive space filled with light, colour and sound.

Our story begins above ground, peering over the edge of the dock surrounded by the bustling harbour, before some audience will journey down 40 feet below sea level into the still and empty void below. As they move from observer to participant, perspectives alters.

There are two experiences that occur simultaneously.

UPSTAIRS (Dock View) These audience will at the top and watch those below interact with the light.

DOWNSTAIRS (Inside the Dock) These Audience will experience the production from 40 feet below sea level, interacting with the light whilst being guided by a narrative through headphones.

The DOWNSTIARS experience is unfortunately not suitable for those with mobility issues, children under 7 years old, or those who are affected by flashing lights. The only access to the dock is via 100 steps, and there will be areas out of bounds so it is important any younger audiences are accompanied by an adult.

Lighting Design by Conal Clapper and Alan Mooney, Original sound score by Katie Richardson. Story by Anna Leckey. This immersive experience encourages visitors to embrace the power of shared and unexpected moments.

Shadowdock is designed to capture the essence of what Belfast 2024 is all about; to reconnect people with their city, engage positively with the world around us and inspire others to think creatively.

This project has been funded by Belfast City Council as part of the Belfast 2024 projects. It has also been funded by the Lightbody Foundation and the Maritime Belfast Trust.

This project is also supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players and is part of Our Future Heritage portfolio of projects which help us all enjoy and understand Belfast's heritage.
